Singer/songwriters say the strangest things
05.29.04 (12:02 am) [edit]
--from John Mayer's Any Given Thursday
When you first meet somebody, you find out they like you, first of all, a friend of a friend of theirs says he or she really really likes you, and it kills you, floors you, sends you to the ground. You’ve got to pick yourself up off the ground. Then you get their phone number and you call them up, right, and you say “Yeah, that’s a really great phone conversation. Can I see you some time?” and then they say this, they say “I’d like that.” Nothing feels better than "I’d like that." So now, your blood pressure's goin', you’re six feet off the ground, you can’t sleep, because of “I’d like that."
So then you hang out for a while, and you call and you talk on the phone all the time, and then you drop the bomb, what feels like the bomb. You say "You know what, I’ve been thinkin about you a lot.” And she goes *Ahhhhhhh." And you go, “What happened?” and she goes, “I’m sorry, I just, I just, I just, that’s, I’ve been thinking about you too.” Bam. Higher into the sky. But now “I’d like that.” *tch. Done. Now you’re up to “I’m thinkin about you.” Then, however number of months pass, it makes you feel comfortable saying it, you say, “I gotta tell you something.” They go, “What?”, you go, “I’m in love with you.” And nothing in the world sounds better than “I’m in love with you.”
And then maybe she starts crying, or maybe he goes *gasp. And all the sudden you’re like, “I’m in.” But now what doesn’t work – “I’d like that,” and “I’ve been thinkin' about you.” Now we’re at, “I’m in love with you.” Then maybe some day it’ll move up to, “I love you.” Fast forward, now you’re like, “I love you al… I love you more than anything in life.” Now “I love you,” doesn’t work. It’s a threshold that keeps movin up. Fast forward, like six months, six weeks, whatever the case may be, now you’re on like, “I want to marry you,” “I want to impregnate you with my love,” “I wanna, I wanna just send my love to you.” Damn it, words don’t work anymore.
And then you say this line, and you know, you know you’ve used this line before, “I just wish they’d put a new word in the dictionary bigger than love because love just doesn’t describe what I feel.” And so now he or she starts askin, “Do you love me?” and you start goin', “Of course I love you.” “Well say it.” And then it becomes, “Say it twice.” And it goes, “Say it three times.” And then, you cross a really interesting point, where all the sudden it becomes, “I hate you, I hate you.” And you go, “Oh my God, she hates me.” And now it’s like, “I hate you more than anything.” And then it’s like, “We’re over.” And then they go, “No we’re not.” And you go, “Yes we are."
Now the words completely do not work at all, you’re left with nothing. You’re throwing punches under water. You’re done. You know what the moral of that story is, if there is one. Never, ever, ever, ever underestimate the power of “I’d like that.”

These are the days that I've been missing
05.28.04 (2:31 pm) [edit]
Weather: Hotter than...well, most things.
Mood: Good.
Book: *kicks herself* Start reading again...
Music: "Twentysomething" -- Jamie Cullum. Off his album, Twentysomething.
Movie: Most recently, Deliver Us From Eva. Kind of crazy, if you ask me.
Musical: Miss Saigon. See (almost) bottom of entry.
Subject of post: Line from "These Are The Days" by aforementioned artist. Hi. Please listen to above album. Above track has neat lyrics and above artist is fantastic. Thank you.
Brief(est) summary (possible):
Driving around Dallas is crazy. Tolls everywhere. Whoa.
A company of select friends in the area is always exciting. Picture two Asians with their hair dyed...well, pretty much orange. Crazy kids. I wish I'd had more time to spend with them, but I am really glad I was able to see them at least.
Looking at The Discovery Channel store's....educational...books and toys with non-romantic soulmate while eating vanilla cinnamon ice cream from Marble Slab Creamery -- all after an interrogatory lunch with the family at Corner Bakery. Priceless.
Lots of shopping. All over the surrounding areas of Dallas. I would say 90% of my time spent doing so. But I walked out close to empty-handed. I guess I don't understand this word "splurge."
Arts Festival was pretty cool. The Crow Collection part of the art museum was neat. There was a flutist there, some Filipino folk dancers, a chamber choir...bueno. "The art of my people"...saw lots of Asian art downstairs, some Chinese calligraphy demonstration things. Then hopped upstairs to check out the Southeast Asia and Indian art galleries.
Saigon. Miss Saigon. At Music Hall in Fair Park. Really good performance. Tragic love story. The guy who played The Engineer was awesome.
And to close...I even got a mendhi tattoo on my hand. Temporary of course, since I'm a wuss. Pretty neat though. If I can get a picture up, I'll post it shortly.

Which John Cusack Are You?
Umm...yay for my music, if that's all I have going for me at the moment. :?
[Wo]men...complicate things
05.18.04 (10:12 pm) [edit]
Weather: Mild. With an extremely gentle breeze.
Mood: Quiet and pensive. My default mode.
Book: My laziness took hold, and I surrendered to TV/movies. I must start something soon. Only a few "free" weeks remain for me to do so.
Music: "You Are The Only One" -- Maria Mena and "Take Me Out" -- Franz Ferdinand.
Movie: Troy. You knew I was going to say it.
Subject of post: Quote from above movie by Odysseus to Achilles. I added in my own little "optional brackets" because I believe the opposite sex can have quite the same effects.
Pretty good movie overall, I thought. General agreements: (1) Brad Pitt as Achilles...as great buff Greek warrior. Nice fit. (2) Orlando Bloom as Paris...*tsk* Pansy. Mama's boy. But he plays it well. (3) Eric Bana as multifaceted Hector. Excellent. (4) Runtime: 163 minutes. At some points of the movie, it felt that long. At others, it did not.
Nothing new lately. Just lounging around my house. A lot. The idleness is unbelievably overpowering. And the tranquility is nice. But I find myself missing a little bit of the busy, which will come shortly as June begins and with it, I must travel back to college for summer classes.
But first...a fun little trip to Dallas (hopefully) this week. Good to get away for a little while, I suppose.
And now, to leave you with one last thought. I hope that my webjournals are not like my children. Because if they are, then my children will all have different fathers -- most of which are five-lettered ones -- and they are scattered all over the place.
Good evening to you.

Good evening to you.
Okay, class. Now pay attention.
05.09.04 (2:17 am) [edit]
Weather: Very windy, but a nice cool breeze to cool the pseudo-summer.
Mood: Simply here.
Music: "Sweetest Goodbye" -- Maroon 5.
Book: But Gentlemen Marry Brunettes -- Anita Loos.
Subject of post: Today's lesson is randomness. Topic is beginning the first letter of every new topic/line break with a bold capital letter. Proceed.
Finals are over. In case you didn't get the memo.
I should really learn how to find my way around the surrounding city north of campus. Very soon. And very well.
McAllister's Deli is the bomb dot com. Tasty sandwiches, and ooh, that sweet tea. You know I'm done for.
Shopping and I are no longer friends. For at least two weeks.
Piano and I are best friends again. It's a reunion.
Moving into an apartment is a very unique experience.
Furniture is the best thing since sliced bread. Bread is pretty good though.
Summer vacation is here. Yippee skippee.
Reading the second half of the aforementioned book. I'm closer to brunette anyway. This should be interesting. The first half was quite the piece of entertainment.
Trip to Dallas, TX, in the works. In actuality, 99% solidified.
Observation: when you find yourself in a crowded room or restaurant, take a good look around. You'll find at least five people in the room pining for someone who (or something that) they have had before or have never had at all. And of those five people, two of them will be staring at who or what they think they want/need. The other three will remain engaged in conversation or polite attentiveness but with preoccupation in their eyes. Bottom line: either way, you will definitely pick up on it.
Lyrics: compliments of Jimmy Eat World.
When the time we have now ends,
When the big hand goes round again,
Can you still feel the butterflies?
Can you still hear the last goodnight?
And the mindless comfort grows
When I'm alone with my great plans.
And this is what she says gets her through it:
"If I don't let myself be happy now, then when?"
If not now, when?
When the time we have now ends,
When the big hand goes round again,
Can you still feel the butterflies?
Can you still hear the last goodnight?
I close my eyes and believe wherever you are,
You're an angel for me.
Enough blogging. For a long while...i.e., until something interesting (to me) happens.

05.06.04 (12:31 am) [edit]
Weather: A little on the warm side. Pretty night though. Boo for light pollution.
Mood: Serene. Green. Yeah.
Book: Organic Chemistry -- Joseph M. Hornback.
Music: "I Wish" -- Skee-Lo. Let's go way back in the day. "I wish I was a little bit taller..." Go on, I know you can sing the rest.
Movie: Nada until after tomorrow's final.
Subject of post: 4 down, 1 to go. Organic II final, 6:00-9:00 p.m. And that's all the schoolin' forever. Until June 1. Le sigh. Oh well, perhaps live music and future movies can cheer me up.
To recap from Monday, Genetics final grade back today...very much so a :D...still don't know about Jazz Age America though. Tuesday: Physics was...traumatic. Two words: "Please curve." This morning, Calculus. Uh..."Wtf, mate?!" Yikes..I think I messed it up. And tomorrow, of course, the final bout of organic chemistry. At least until the MCAT.
Should probably do a little studying, but that will shortly turn into, "Eh, I'd rather just go to bed." What an exciting life I lead.
So, tomorrow night after my last final will be party/cleaning night. More so the latter. Friday I check out of this dorm for good, and Saturday I'm moving furniture (or rather delegating others to move furniture ) into my apartment. Woohoo. And so begins "The Drama Summer" (song by The Starting Line). Have a listen, if you're into the whin[e]y kind of punkish music.
Goodbye and good night.

B field, current, voltage. It's electrifying
05.04.04 (11:27 am) [edit]
Weather: Uh...it's getting hot in here. (Don't finish that...:-P)
Mood: Pretty good.
Book: Physics for Scientists & Engineeers -- Douglas C. Giancoli, third edition.
Music: "Temptation" -- Diana Krall. Off of her new album, The Girl In the Other Room. Sounds pretty good.
Movie: None until finals week is over.
Subject of post: Today is my General Physics II for Engineers final. Game on.
Dormitory fire alarms may very well be the bane of my existence. Curses to those who didn't get out of bed at 3:00 a.m yesterday. Don't worry -- it's just jealousy talking from someone who can't sleep through it because the fire alarm is actually right outside her room.
So. Finals week began yesterday. Two down, three to go. Jazz Age America yesterday morning...not so bad...writing on autopilot. Followed by three-hour hardcore cramming session even though I wasn't really awake. Genetics test that afternoon...not as bad as I thought it would be either. But my professor is a tricky, tricky man.
Okay, time to grab lunch and go study for "Fizz-icks." ;-) I'm sure I'll be back to update/procrastinate...among studying, packing, and other things. Ta ta for now.

47 hours and counting
05.01.04 (9:38 pm) [edit]
Weather: Chilly, in my opinion. But the skies are amazing.
Mood: Like reading an engrossing book and finding out that someone has torn out the last page.
Book: Genetics: From Genes to Genomes -- Leland Hartwell, et al.
Music: "Twisted Nerve" -- Bernard Herrmann. From the Kill Bill, Vol. 1 Soundtrack. You know, the whistling song.
Movie: Mystic River. Watched it last night.
Subject of post: My first final is that far away. Honors Perspectives -- Jazz Age America. And a Genetics final three hours later. Let the games begin.
So...above movie weirded me out a little. And miscommunication among company...shall we say...thwarted the evening a bit. But I think all is still well.
Yay, my laptop is back. *hugs it*...just kidding.
Happy birthday, brother and mother. Today's the midpoint between their birthdays. Dinner with the family tonight. And moving stuff into my apartment. Good. Missing a going away/dinner party for a new acquaintance. Bad. :(
All right. Back to studying.
And now, a word from our sponsors. [link] Hope I get to see him perform live sometime.
